Disability Act 2006 for service providers

The Disability Act 2006 provides a legislative scheme for people with a disability which reaffirms and strengthens their rights and responsibilities.

The Act includes a set of principles that highlight disability service providers responsibilities in the provision of supports and services.

Disability service providers are defined as:

  • The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
  • Organisations that are registered under the Act to provide disability services.

The Act also sets out the requirements for providing information to ensure that people with a disability are fully informed of their rights and responsibilities.  This information must, where possible, be explained to the person and provided in a format that the person is most likely to understand.
